Are you looking for a volunteering role which is both challenging and rewarding? Being a school governor certainly meets these criteria. It would give you a crucial role in shaping the future of children in our community.
We are a Junior School, categorised as ‘good’ by Ofsted with strong ambitions and plans to further improve so that our children have the best possible education and experiences to develop as people ready and equipped to move to the next phase of their education and with a foundation for their later lives.
Our Governors are either elected - staff and parents - or co-opted. They come from a variety of backgrounds, both in the private and public sector, and with a range of skills and experience. We have a strong and capable team but we do need to co-opt additional members to work with us for the benefit of our children.
The role of governors is to ‘support’ and ‘challenge’. This means being supportive, but questioning, in helping the school to meet its aims and being challenging by holding school leaders to account for pupil outcomes and their financial and operational management of the school.
We would be pleased to hear from anyone with an interest in education who is prepared to:
1. engage with the school to improve the education of our young people
2. bring their perspective and views to the governing body
3. take responsibility for tasks, as an individual or as a team player
4. make a regular but limited time commitment to the role
Governors are well supported: Hampshire Governor Services run induction courses for new governors as well as a program of other courses covering different aspects of governance. They also operate the Hampshire Governors’ Intranet, publish a fortnightly newsletter and provide a help desk. There is a governors’ area on the school’s website - we are paperless in the way we work.

Although a professional background would be an asset, with the training and support available, no specific prior experience is necessary apart from enthusiasm to make our children’s education better and the desire to give back something of real value to our community.
