COVID-19 Response Hospital Support Volunteer

The role of the COVID-19 Response Support Volunteer is to assist the Trust during the COVID-19 Pandemic. This role has specific COVID-19 restrictions so please read complete opportunity before enquiring. This role is not based in a clinical area in direct contact with patients but volunteers may pass through public areas, social distancing, wearing a clinical mask and good hand hygiene should be adhered to. This is an active role and volunteers must be physically mobile. 

The role of the welfare support volunteer may include the following tasks:

  • Relaying communications from relatives to patients ( by passing to staff on wards) including initiatives such as 2Staying in Touch2 patient messaging service
  • Taking receipt of, organising and distributing donations from the public and local companies
  • Packing wellbeing bags for staff
  • Ensuring supplies of food, hot and cold drinks, toiletries etc. available for staff
  • Running errands for patients or staff to allow ward staff to remain on the wards
  • Displaying latest information posters around the site
  • Assisting the portering team with the delivery of meal trollies
  • Supporting the collation of PPE supplies for distribution
  • Distributing PPE across the trust - not entering clinical areas
  • Collection and delivery of Pharmacy bags to wards, for urgent items only - e.g. to deliver "To Take Out" medicines (TTO's) to ward / discharge lounge - to enable a quicker patient discharge
  • Delivering medicines - at agreed locations on the site e.g. dedicated pharmacy collection points on site / patient homes 
  • Undertaking other miscellaneous tasks as required

**Due to  COVID-19 guidance and restrictions set out by the government to protect the public, our patients and NHS Staff,  the Trust requires that anyone interested in volunteering with us at this time is:

  • between the age of 17 and 64 (as advised by our Health4Work department )
  • fit and well and has no symptoms, such as a cough or high temperature or loss of, or change to their sense of taste and smell and neither does anybody in their household
  • not pregnant
  • not living with any long-term health conditions that makes them vulnerable to coronavirus**

All volunteers will be expected to complete the non-clinical Trust induction for new starters which is accessed online. Therefore volunteers will need access to a computer / smart phone etc. Ongoing volunteer supervision will be carried out and yearly refresher training. 


Skills and abilities required :

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Physically mobile and able to move around the hospital site
  • Willing to learn and to follow instruction from members of staff
  • Good attention to detail
  • Basic administration and IT skills
  • Committed to help and support staff and the ability to liaise with professionals at all levels
  • Adaptable and willing to learn, with a flexible and responsive approach
  • Punctual and reliable
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Understands the need for confidentiality
  • An understanding of when and how to report concerns to the appropriate member of staff
  • A commitment to uphold trust core values and NHS policies. 

DBS checks and appropriate references are required before volunteering can commence.
