Home-schooling is never an easy proposition, let alone trying to do three pieces of homework for three children on just one mobile phone! It's something many households take for granted, each member of the family having access to their own laptop, tablet or mobile phone (some maybe even have all 3) - yet for some households across the district this is far from reality.
Lion's IT Refurbishment Project started prior to lockdown and initially looked to recycle and refurbish computers and IT peripherals for redistribution to charities and voluntary organisations. However it now focuses on supplying computers to disadvantaged families so their children can continue with their education at home.
So far over 550 families across North Hampshire have benefitted from one of our computers.
If we find ourselves facing a further lockdown (as have some areas across the UK) schools are now legally obliged to deliver home learning sessions, we therefore need to do all we can to ensure that children are not the casualties and find themselves falling behind their peers for want of a refurbished computer.
Demand is huge across the area and to maintain supply we are now looking for volunteers to help refurbish the computers (from home) which are donated by local residents and businesses.
If you are a technical whizz - comfortable in wiping and installing software and would like to do something of real value to local children during this ongoing pandemic we'd love to hear from you.
The software to be installed is an official copy of Windows 10 Pro and a range of free software, including Libre Office.
Volunteers will be walked through the process and the hardware can either be dropped off at the volunteer's home address or they can collect from a central point in Church Crookham.
Got a few hours to spare? Give it a go......
High level of IT competency.
Experience of removing and installing software from various hardware including older computers, laptops, tablets.
Happy to commit to weekly activity.
As home based and IT will be delivered and collected to the volunteers home address no access issues.

When can I volunteer?
As the role is home-based volunteers can choose when they undertake the 'wiping' and reinstalling of the new software. Ideally we are looking for volunteers to process circular 10 computers per week. Each computer can take 2/3hrs to prepare but can run whilst the volunteer (especially if working from home) undertakes other activities.
This opportunity can be carried out whilst working from home.
