School Governor

We are currently recruiting a volunteer to join the governing body of Heatherside Junior School in Fleet.

Governors attend meetings, ask challenging questions, and visit the school.

The strength of a governing body lies in its ability to attract and rely upon members from a wide variety of backgrounds, share out the duties amongst its members, and be able to take decisions as a group.

This board level position gives a fantastic real world experience of director roles and increase leadership skills, all whilst helping the local community.

Governing bodies have a strong focus on three core strategic functions:

1. Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and direction.

2. Holding the head teacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils.

3. Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure money is well spent.

Time Commitment averages around 4-8 hours per month, including travel time. Meetings are usually held in the evening and have the freedom to organise their own structure.

Governors may also be involved with:

Visits in to school.

Special projects.

Staff recruitment.

For this particular role we are especially interested to hear from anyone with a background in HR, legal or education professions.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Whilst no prior experience is necessary ideally you will have a background in business as this could prove advantageous.

Becoming a school governor is an excellent opportunity to give something of real value back to the local community.

The role is varied and yet doesn't 'take over your life'. It's also an ideal way of sharing your life experience / business knowledge and can be incredibly advantageous for those looking for 'board' level experience.

There is no requirement to be a parent in order to become a school governor.

Volunteers must be 18+ and for the purposes of safeguarding, all governor appointments are subject to an identity check.
