Enjoy reading? Some free time over the summer? We are looking for volunteers (aged 14 upwards) to support our annual Summer Reading Challenge at Yateley library.
This national scheme provided by the Reading Agency and delivered for free throughout Hampshire’s libraries is designed for children aged 4-11 with the aim to keep them reading during the school holidays. (July 17th - Sept 17th).
The role involves the following activities and in the main volunteers will be talking to children, parents and carers.
· You will explain how to take part and may help families register to take the Summer Reading Challenge using a laptop, tablet or a public computer
· Talk to children about books they have chosen and what they like to read, encouraging them to share their views
· Understand and be able to explain about the Summer Reading Challenge, including how to use and unlock the app
· Hand out stickers when books have been read and medals when they complete the 6 book Challenge
· Generally help in the library with other duties and customer enquiries
· You will assist with general administration and help customers by referring enquiries to relevant members of staff
Experience gained:
- A chance to learn more about libraries and books.
- Work experience to put on your CV.
- Training and confidence talking to customers – both children and adults.
- A boost to your self-confidence and some independence.
Skills
Who we are looking for volunteers who are:
- Aged 14 or over.
- Are enthusiastic about reading.
- Good at talking and listening to young children and adults in a friendly and patient way.
- Like helping people.
- Are reliable and a good time-keeper.
- Can remain calm at busy times but cope when things are quieter.
- Are available through the summer - you can still take a summer holiday! :)

Availability Details
Time commitment: From a couple of hours upwards. We try to have at least one volunteer in the library at all times over the summer. We are open Mon, Tues, Thu, Fri, Sat (am). The scheme runs from 17th July - 17th September. You will need to attend an induction session before you start.
