Treasurer – Basingstoke Canal Society

We are looking for an individual to lead on the management of our finances and investments as the existing Hon Treasurer is stepping down.

With 900 members and over 240 volunteers the Society are the guardians of the canal which runs through Surrey and Hampshire.  The Society is organised with sub committees and a governance structure. It works alongside the councils’ managing authority and its overarching aim is to ‘keep the canal alive’ by

·        Promoting the future of the canal

·        Protecting our environment

·        Providing community leisure activities

·        Preserving our heritage

The canal is a vital local amenity with virtually its whole length designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. It provides a great range of leisure activities including boating, running, walking, cycling and angling


Skills

You will be a Director of the Society and a member of its Executive Committee, taking the lead on ensuring its finances are managed effectively and in accordance with regulatory and legal requirements.  The key requirements are to:

·       Maintain financial records and produce monthly management financial reports

·       Lead the annual budget setting process

·       Prepare annual accounts and lead the external examination process

·       Manage all banking operations.

Availability Details

This is a voluntary position and the time commitment and precise content are flexible. There may be opportunities, either as part of the role or through collaboration with others, to be involved with project analysis and planning, day to day bookkeeping and/or overview of the Society’s two trading subsidiaries. As a guide it is not expected that you would need to spend more than the equivalent of one day a month to undertake the core aspects of this role. Most of this role can be done from home.


Location
