Volunteer Tool Collectors

We are looking for volunteers across the country to collect donated tools from our supporters.

We collect usable unwanted tools, refurbish them, sort them into trade kits and send them to the developing world for livelihood creation. We already send 18 containers packed with over 450,000 individual tools to Africa every year but there is so much demand for tools that we need more volunteers to join us. That’s where you come in!

This is a great role for anyone who likes driving and meeting people.  You don't need to know about tools, but you will need to know what we can and can't take.  For example we'll take garden rakes but not lawn rakes, we'll take computers but not printers.  All this is explained in our Tools Wanted leaflet which we send out to supporters and give to collectors.

The role involves collecting tools at a mutually agreeable time from people donating locally to you. This may be a quick in and out, but sometimes it may be a bereaved person parting with a loved one’s precious tools.  If so, they may appreciate a chat about what we will do with their donation over a cup of tea.  We want to be a compassionate charity and so look for compassionate volunteers.

You will need a shed or part of a garage to store the tools until the TWAM van comes to collect them for their onward journey to our workshops to be refurbished.

It is an amazing role as your volunteer legacy will be that thousands of people across Africa are transforming their lives with the tools you collected.  How incredible is that!

We are looking for volunteers who:

  • Enjoy meeting and talking to people in the community
  • Have access to their own transport to collect tools in their area (you can decide how wide this area is)
  • Have space in their garage or shed to safely store donated tools until our vans pick them up
  • Are compassionate and mindful that some people may be donating tools following a bereavement
